Present Joys

“We thank the Lord of heaven and earth
who hath preserved us from our birth
for present joys, for blessings past,
and for the hope of heaven at last.”

I obtained my BFA at Columbus College of Art & Design.

What a day today was! Let me tell you about it:

  • I got a lot of sleep: eight hours of sleep. Better sleep than I’ve gotten in ages.
  • We met this super-cool dude Bryan Kahrs in the hotel lobby at 9am. He talked about his life and reviewed some of our portfolios.
  • Then we all walked to Chipotle in search of a cheap lunch. After that, Anna, Julia, and I wandered around the city with Lutz, Burleigh, and Vicki Golden, where we found both a really cool street market and the Oscar-Meyer Weinermobile.
  • Then we toured Target HQ, which is quaintly nested in downtown Minneapolis, and was great. While there, we took a peek in the Target-branded gift shop.
  • After that, we headed over to the convention center to register, where we got a big bag of random things. We then proceeded to shop around the tradeshow floor for even more random things like free posters and paper samples and chapstick thingies.
  • Went to the conference’s first general session, which was three hours long and featured a ton of different interesting things (including George Lois!)
  • Ate hors d’oeuvres and stuff during a really busy opening reception, where I got to meet Michael Bierut! And do all kinds of other fun stuff, including: spending time with people I enjoy and drinking weird things and trying to coordinate 14 people jumping in unison at a photobooth.
  • Rejected my friends’ requests to “go dancing” (whatever the heck that even means) and instead went to a late-night screening of the very nice documentary Sign Painters.
  • More sleep, right now? This is so very nice.

What I did this week (4 oct 2013)

  • Had an action-packed week in jewelry. Worked on weaving a fine silver chain and fabricating its clasp, polishing and finishing cast rings, squeezing things in the hydraulic press, and patinating all the things.
  • Attempted to concentrate on big nonprofit project, due next tuesday. Had trouble concentrating.
  • Asked for and received many tips on making delicious bloody marys.
  • Got free breakfast in class on wednesday morning. But who buys bagels without cream cheese?
  • Ate lunch with Amanda in the jewelry lab, by which I mean: Amanda and I met in the jewelry lab where she worked in Photoshop and I loudly filed metal and neither of us ate any food because eating is not allowed in the jewelry lab.
  • Watched avant-garde non-American 1960s films in History of Cinema.
  • Lots more time and occasional aggravation in the jewelry lab. While putting the finishing touches on my bronze/rose quartz ring, wore a hole straight through the bezel.
  • Had good talks and fun times with friends. Helped distress posters by sitting on them. Got kinda annoyed at Squarespace’s total world domination.
  • Went on a minor adventure with Julia and discovered that the Interior Design students are hoarding maracas.
  • Friday morning, met up with Theresa and Anna outside a nearby church to take some stealthy photos for my project (the one due tuesday). Narrowly avoided being yelled at by a bow-tied man in a pink oxford.
  • Finished up some work in the jewelry lab; ran into La-Neka; literally polished away one of my fingerprints (it hurt).
